What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a modern, evidence-based and neuroscience-informed approach that combines effective talking therapy with the deeply relaxing state of hypnosis. It draws on the latest research in brain function to help you understand why you feel the way you do and how to change it.

Rather than focusing on the past or problems, it helps you shift your attention to solutions, identify your own strengths, and take positive steps forward. By working with the brain’s natural processes, including how we think, how we manage stress, and how the brain rewires itself, this approach can reduce anxiety, improve sleep and focus, and support long-lasting change.

Many people turn to Solution Focused Hypnotherapy for support with:

  • Stress and anxiety relief – feel calmer, lighter, and more in control

  • Sleep problems – improve relaxation and enjoy more restful nights

  • Confidence and self-esteem – build belief in yourself and your abilities

  • Phobias and fears – gently overcome challenges that hold you back

  • Breaking habits – such as smoking, overeating, or nail biting

  • Pain management – ease discomfort and support overall wellbeing

  • Performance enhancement – whether in work, sport, exams, or creative pursuits

  • Finding balance – restore peace of mind and enjoy life more fully

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy offers a safe, supportive space to explore your goals and take practical steps forward—helping you live the life you truly want, one step at a time.

If you’d like to find out how it could help you personally, I’d love to hear from you—please feel free to get in touch for a friendly, no-pressure chat.

I also hold a Level 4 Certificate in Counselling Skills and a PGCE in Post-Compulsory Education and Training, with over 15 years’ experience in support, education, and wellbeing across Further and Higher Education, as well as within the charity sector.

I’m passionate about helping people understand how their brains work and how they can change. Through a combination of practical tools and relaxing hypnosis, I support clients in reconnecting with their inner resources and regaining a sense of control, confidence, and direction.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a gentle and effective way to create positive change. Instead of focusing on what’s gone wrong in the past, it helps you build on your strengths and move towards the future you want. Through a combination of talking therapy and deep relaxation, you can reduce stress, calm anxious thoughts, and feel more in control of your life.

From a neuroscience perspective, when you focus on solutions and imagine positive change, your brain begins to form new, healthier pathways. These small but powerful shifts help you feel calmer, more resilient, and more motivated to reach your goals.

FAQ

  • Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) can help with a wide range of issues by focusing on a client's present and future goals rather than dwelling on past problems. By combining psychotherapy with hypnosis, SFH helps clients make positive changes and build a more optimistic outlook.

In addition to managing anxiety and stress, SFH is a powerful tool for overcoming addictions such as smoking, as it helps to change deeply ingrained subconscious habits. It's also highly effective for improving sports performance by helping athletes manage pre-game nerves, increase focus, and visualize success. For individuals seeking weight loss, SFH can address emotional eating and a negative mindset around food. It can also assist with specific issues like insomnia , phobias and fears, as well as helping to build confidence and self-esteem. The approach is also used to support those dealing with depression, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, and managing chronic pain.

  • Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) sessions are a relaxing and collaborative experience, typically lasting around 50 to 60 minutes.

The first half of the session is future focused and helps you understand what is happening in your brain that makes you feel the way you do. Instead of dwelling on past problems, I will ask you solution-focused questions to help you visualize your "preferred future" and set clear goals. This helps to shift your mindset from problem-focused to solution-focused.

In the second half, I will guide you into a hypnotic trance. You'll sit comfortably and be led into a deeply relaxed state. Contrary to what you might see in movies, you will remain aware and in control. This is a very natural state, similar to daydreaming. While you are deeply relaxed, I will use positive, uplifting language to reinforce your goals. You'll leave feeling calm, relaxed, and more positive.

  • Trance is a very natural and safe state of mind. It's often described as a focused daydream, a state we all experience several times a day without even realizing it. For example, have you ever driven somewhere and not remembered parts of the journey, or been so engrossed in a book or film that you lose track of time? That's a form of trance.

During a hypnotherapy session, you are simply being guided into this state intentionally. I use relaxing language to help you achieve a deep state of mental and physical calm. While in this state, your mind is more receptive to positive suggestions and ideas. You are always in complete control and can't be made to do anything against your will. You remain fully aware of what's happening and can bring yourself out of the trance at any time. Hypnotic trance is a safe and powerful tool for positive change.
